One of my life goals is to introduce Japanese culture to foreigners who have never been to Japan or haven’t got exposed to our culture. Today was a great day for me personally, as I had the opportunity to share Japanese hip hop or as categorised in Japan as Nihongo Rap (日本語ラップ) to the world (well internet world…)!
Thanks to DJ FRAZZIE FRAZ, MAHKA, ROMAIN FX and YUNUS at FAUVE RADIO, a killer online radio station in Hong Kong, I was able to share an hour’s worth of my favourite tunes predominantly from Tokyo, and a little bit from my home town, Yokohama (represent 045!). The idea was to showcase the dope skills of Japanese MCs and producers, which I think is on par with the rest of the world. I selected tracks chronologically roughly from 1995 to 2016 period and all were original vinyl pressings, aside from few reissues. Also, the tracks are boom bap style and I wanted to show the wide variety of MCs with distinct styles and flow. I hope you can enjoy the track without understanding a word of Japanese, but simply feel the ill vibe.
Unfortunately, this is the first time I have done anything like this, and my DJ skills are as good as my 3 year old son. Gotta practise hard like Daniel san to “wax on, wax off” for next time. Anyway, click on the video below to peep the ill tracks and my wack skills. Also there is a track list below for those who wanna check the artists.
