Video is big deal these days, with everyone from social media to marketing companies jumping on the bandwagon. However, for musicians, video has been a tool of choice to visualise their songs and thanks to MTV in the 90s, music videos have become an art form in itself. Sometimes propelling careers of music video directors into film directors, like my favs SPIKE JONZE or HYPE WILLIAMS, amongst many others.
As Nihongo Rap (Japanese rap) scene gains mainstream attraction, music videos of independent rappers are on point, it puts the majors to shame. Couple this with independent creative studios pushing out state of the art videos at a fraction of the cost and time, it breeds creativity on a whole new level.
One of my favourite music video directors in the Nihongo Rap scene is HAVIT ART STUDIO, who are absolutely murdering the music video game right now. I like their cinematography, colouring, and they create a good story that works well with the lyrics and tracks. This is so important right now, as I know many foreigners would watch the video and it visually translates the songs meaning. Below are few videos that I love from HAVIT ART STUDIO.
KOHH – Hikouki
RYKEY – Honne
KZM – Wangan
HANNYA – Ano koro janee
PISCES – Onomatopee
